So much to say, so little time!
The next 2 or 3 comics are going to be a little late. I’ll upload them all on Monday. Homework was catching up to me so I needed to put some time in to that - but MORE IMPORTANTLY -I’m doing 24-Hour Comic Day this weekend!
If you’ve never heard of 24-Hour Comic Day, it’s a complete blast. You get together with a bunch of strangers/friends and, over the span of 24 hours, try to complete a 24-page comic. This will be the 4th year in a row that I’ve participated, and every time, I’ve walked away from it more motivated than ever to draw more comics.
I’ll be spending the 24 hours in the cafeteria of the local art college here in Calgary (a lovely place called “ACAD”), drawing comics with 14 other crazy art students. We’ll be drawing from 10:00am on Oct. 18 to 10:00am on Oct. 19, so if you happen to wander in to the school during that time, you’ll see me there (…well…I have a class on the Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm upstairs, so I’ll be running back and forth between my class and the cafeteria until 4:00pm. But any time AFTER 4:00pm, you’ll be able to see me there).
Whew. I’ve got more stuff to say, but I’ll save it for my next post.
I’ll try to post my 24-page comic here some time on Sunday evening (Mountain Time). The Cognomania comics for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will then all be uploaded some time on Monday.
See you in a few days!
A few weeks ago, I participated in a fun comic-making challenge at the Sketch Tavern forum with a few other cartoonists. The idea was that, over the weekend of August 23-24, we would each try to get some comic pages done and then we would post ‘em on the forum for each other to see.
My personal goal was to finish 28 random one-page comics over the course of the weekend, but I failed brutally and only finished nine (don’t worry - I did an extra two on Monday to make myself feel better, heh heh). Each of the comics took about 2-4 hours to make (1-2 hours to think of the idea + pencil it + ink it, and then 1-2 hours to scan the page, sloppily colour it and upload the file), which got me thinking that….maaaybe, if I was disciplined enough, I MIGHT be able to possibly keep doing one of these comic pages a day…and thus have my own daily webcomic.
I’ve pretty much dreamed of being a great cartoonist ever since I was a sperm (and/or egg), but, sadly, I suffer from the fatal creative affliction known only as “perfectcrastinationism”. It’s a debilitating medical condition, but I think doing some random, silly comics every day could be just the cure for it and, now that I have this 11-comic buffer under my belt….I’m beginning to think I can actually do this.
I don’t really know what this webcomic is gonna be about. I’ll figure that out as I do the pages. For now, I’m just gonna treat the whole thing as an exercise in creativity; each strip will be a completely random one-page story. I’m gonna call the strip “Cognomania”.
So yeah: here we go.
